Study Task 6 - Peer Review

What is the main subject area / question the illustrator is looking into?

  • Objectification of women in the media/in general? (unclear)
  • How women are seen in porn.
  • Women's bodies.

What are the strengths in how they have responded to this subject area?

(Breadth of research? Criticality of image analysis? Effective Triangulation?)
  • Different articles and texts have been looked into which can be clearly seen in the work that has been created in the visual journal.
  • Possibly look into more books about objectification.
  • Porn documentaries (Netflix).
  • The presentation contains plenty of images that have been considered for image analysis with two slides that focus on two of the main images that have been used in the essay.

How have they responded to the Visual Journal element? (ideas, content, materials, process, experimentation, crafting…)

List 3 positive points:
  • The idea of using collage to respond to the research creates strong work because a lot of the images have been found in advertisements where women are used as objects to sell products.
  • The more minimal collages are the best designs as the message is clear to the point rather than making it too complex and overcomplicating it.
  • It is clear that there has been thought behind the work with the use of women's bodies being almost censored by found materials.
And 3 areas that could be developed further:
  • Looking further into pornography could make the ideas develop a lot further. Could you interpret meat alongside the women?
  • Have you considered trying other methods of approach (such as shape etc.)?
  • Need to narrow down your ideas to either heroic women are objectified women. Which idea are you most interested in?

How effectively is the illustrator synthesising research, contextual analysis and their own practical explorations? (Does it all make sense together? Do elements feel connected?)
  • It is clear in the visual responses that the research has been considered but it possibly needs to be looked into further to make the ideas more clear.
  • The work focuses on one idea and links to the research that has already taken place, especially in the texts that have been read.
  • Maybe look at more collage artists to strengthen your ideas?

What are the next steps with the research project, practical and theoretical?
(Is a more experimental approach required? Do they need to find more imagery? Is there a particular practical focus they should continue with? Be Honest, Critical and Helpful as to how this project can grow from this point.)
  • Continue focusing on how women are objectified in the media, narrowing your ideas down to women in pornography.
  • Find more existing imagery such as porn magazines and advertisements that use women's bodies to promote their products.
  • Possibly be more experimental the your collages by looking at other similar artists and see how they create their work.
  • Continue with keeping the collages minimal because they get the message across a lot faster than the more complex designs which can become too overcomplicated.
