Pros and Cons of Different Research Methods

LCA Library 

Pros:

  • Good reliability.
  • Variation of books from different years/publishers etc.
  • Easily accessed. 
  • Journals and podcasts are also available.

Cons:

  • Might not have the book you need.
  • Some books my be biased making them unreliable sources.

Google Books (preview):

Pros:

  • Allows access to books that may not be available in the library.
  • You can see a preview of the book before buying it to see if it is relevant to your research.
  • The book is always available on your computer.

Cons:

  • It costs money to see the whole book.
  • The author could lose a degree of control of their book making it unreliable.

Google Scholar:

Pros:

  • You can see how many times the article has been cited by others.
  • Easily accessible.

Cons:

  • It isn't controlled by people meaning there can sometimes be errors.
  • It doesn't find all the possible reliable sources.

Websites 

Pros:

  • Can be easily used.
  • There are a large number of accessible sources. 

Cons:

  • Sources could be biased and unreliable. 

Jstor

Pros:

  • Journals and books can be accessed. 
  • They can be downloaded as a PDF making it more accessible.
  • The material can be cited.

Cons:

  • Most of the sources require an account to be able to access more information.
